The Southern Swan is a 130ft three-masted barquentine, built in Denmark in 1922. Originally names Matilde, the ship was intended for trading with Greenland, but spent most of her career transporting grain to the Tuborg Brewery. She was renamed Pacific in 1926, Hans Christian Andersen in 1930 and Svanen (Swan) in 1938. Purchased by a Canadian Couple in the 1960s, she undertook extensive restoration sailing to Canada in 1978 to be work as a training ship in Victoria, British Columbia. Based in Sydney from 1988, the ship operated charters along the east coast and in 2007 she was bought by the Woods and Warne families, forming the company Sydney Harbour TallShips and renaming the vessel, the Southern Swan.

The Søren Larsen is a 140ft Brigantine, two master square rigger, built in 1949 in Denmark. The voyaging Tall Ship has circumnavigated the globe twice. The ship was employed on the Baltic trade routes, hauling cargo throughout Scandinavia and northern Europe. In 1972, the ship was gutted by fire. She was laid up until 1978, when the hull was purchased by Square Sail Britain and underwent extensive restoration. On resuming operations in 1979, Søren Larsen took to the stage in television and film, appearing in BBC series The Onedin Line, the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman, In Search of the Mary Celeste, and Shackleton. In late 2011, she was purchased by Sydney Harbour Tallships and continues to sail in the South Pacific.

Both the Southern Swan and the Søren Larsen were chartered for the 1987-88 First Fleet Re-enactment Voyage, departing from England in May 1987, and sailing via Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Mauritius, and Fremantle before arriving in Sydney in 1988.
